Hexas Arcanum is a reimagining of the classic game of Texas Hold'em by infusing it with mechanical powers and urban fantasy themes. I conceptualized the game from the ground up from a self-initiated brief in which I was tasked to redesign a traditional game and develop it to include powers and a theme.

As a passionate gamer and designer, this project was an exciting opportunity to push the boundaries of game design. Starting from a blank slate, I conceptualized and developed Hexas Arcanum, creating everything from game mechanics and card designs to the visual identity and packaging. This project allowed me to explore my creativity and design skills, crafting a game that challenges traditional poker dynamics and provides a deeply engaging narrative experience.

Betting Through Narrative

The strategy for Hexas Arcanum focused on expanding the familiar mechanics of Texas Hold'em to include new elements and presenting them in a compelling theme.

During the conceptual phase, research and brainstorming were conducted to define the game’s premise. Word association exercises linked Texas Hold'em with the concept of power, leading to an urban fantasy setting and utilizing Texas Hold’em’s three betting phases as a three-act storytelling framework.

The primary goal became developing a narrative-driven game where players embody urban fantasy characters, engaging in strategic power struggles as the story unfolded with each flip of a card along the “street” and each hand leading to higher stakes and the “series” end. This blend of traditional card game mechanics with rich storytelling and thematic depth sets Hexas Arcanum apart, offering a fresh and immersive experience.

Through the Veil

The visual identity of Hexas Arcanum was crafted through inspiration from urban fantasy character stereotypes, genre tropes, and associated stylings.

Characters were designed with distinct visual traits, symbols, and color palettes to ensure recognizability and thematic consistency. Tarot-inspired designs were incorporated to enhance the visual appeal, creating an immersive experience that resonated with urban fantasy and card game enthusiasts.

Finding a cohesive imagery contributed to a rich visual narrative, drawing players into the game’s world.

Symbols and Suites

The card graphics and icon development were pivotal in bringing the game to life. Character and major arcana cards were illustrated to reflect their narrative roles and theme within the setting.

Icons and visual markers were developed to link traditional game elements and communicate connections between interactions during a game phase and actions visually.

These elements were designed to be easily recognizable, aiding in player immersion and engagement. The consistent visual language helped create a compelling and coherent game world.

Laying the Groundwork

To further enhance the game’s immersion and provide a functional aid, a card placement game mat was developed. Inspired by the concept of a card run or "street", each setting character’s domain is represented.

The placement of graphic elements, (buildings, card placement, shadows, and colors) were carefully considered and organized to be thematic but also direct a player’s eye and clearly communicate information without being overwhelming.

Making a Mark

The logo for Hexas Arcanum was designed to encapsulate the game’s essence, combining elements of urban fantasy and traditional card games. The typography and iconography were chosen to reflect the game’s thematic depth and narrative-driven approach.

The logo’s design aimed to be both eye-catching and representative of the game’s unique identity, contributing to brand recognition and appeal. It was an essential part of the game’s visual identity, helping to establish a strong first impression.

Lasting Impressions

The packaging for Hexas Arcanum was developed to reflect the game’s rich narrative setting. The goal was to create packaging that could be part of that world, visually appealing and enticing potential players, while also serving as a display piece.

The design features a slick black background with a matte finish and raised foil scrollwork and logo. High-quality materials and printing techniques ensure durability and aesthetic appeal, with rich textures adding to the visual impact.

The packaging design plays a crucial role in marketing the game, providing an attractive and engaging introduction to the game’s world.

Virtual Playtesting

Hexas Arcanum’s game assets were ported into Tabletop Simulator, an immersive three-dimensional virtual gaming space, to facilitate playtesting and quicker accessibility.

The implementation included 3D models of the game components, including the cards and game mat. This digital version helped with testing and feedback, enabling players to experience Hexas Arcanum in a virtual environment and providing valuable insights for further development.
